What Is Pregnancy Physiotherapy?
Pregnancy physiotherapy (also known as antenatal physiotherapy) is a specialised branch of physiotherapy focused on the physical changes and challenges women face during pregnancy. As your baby grows, your body adapts — affecting your posture, joints and core- and inevitably, your ability to be able to move through your pregnancy comfortably. At Danielle Malone Physio, we help you manage these changes safely with personalised treatment plans designed to:
Reduce pain and discomfort
Improve mobility and stability
Strengthen your pelvic floor and core to prevent urinary incontinence
Prepare your body for labour and recovery
Common Conditions Treated in Pregnancy Physio
Many women are surprised by the level of physical strain pregnancy can place on the body, but it is important to note, these symptoms are common and treatable. There is a huge body of evidence to say physiotherapy throughout your pregnancy can help to keep you comfortable and moving well in the lead up to your delivery. There is also evidence to suggest exercise within pregnancy can have an impact on conditions such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.
Our expert women’s health physiotherapist can help you manage:
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
Lower back pain
Sciatica
Postural tension and headaches
Pelvic floor weakness or incontinence
We also offer guidance on how to safely continue exercise throughout your pregnancy and how best to prep your body for your upcoming delivery, regardless of your birthing plan.
What to Expect During Your Pregnancy Physio Appointment
At your first appointment, we’ll start with a detailed consultation to understand your symptoms, health history, and pregnancy experience so far. We then assess your movement, posture, and muscle activation patterns to create a customised treatment plan. It’s important to note, what your appointment will look like will totally depend on your presentation . Some women will present to physio to learn more about their pregnant bodies, where as someone else might present with symptoms such as pain or injury. How we would approach these are very different.
And so, depending on your presentation, your session may include:
-Gentle, hands-on manual therapy
-Pelvic floor muscle training
-Postural and ergonomic advice
-Safe, trimester-specific exercises
-Education on birth preparation (breathing, labour positions, perineal massage)
-Ongoing support as your pregnancy progresses

Is Pregnancy Physio Safe?
Yes — pregnancy physiotherapy is completely safe when provided by a trained women’s health physiotherapist. All treatments and exercises are tailored to your individual needs. Whether you’re in your first trimester or nearing your due date, physiotherapy can be an effective, non-invasive way to feel better and stay active.
When Should You Book a Pregnancy Physio Appointment?
You don’t need to wait for pain to seek support. Many women benefit from starting physio early in their pregnancy — even if it’s just to maintain mobility and prevent issues later on. If you are feeling well and just looking to learn more about you pelvic floor and what might benefit you in prep for delivery and prevention of issues going forward, we often recommend attending in your second trimester, often after your 20 week scan. Obviously, if you are symptomatic of anything such as pain, discomfort, incontinence, vaginal dragging/heaviness and need to come sooner, then this is recommended.
